Vacation Quilts

 One of the fun things that has become a tradition for me, is that when my husband and I travel, I try to find fabric that is specific to that area and make something with it. For me it is a great way to remember a vacation. I also collect Christmas ornaments, but that is another post. 

It all started a few years ago when my quilting and sewing took off. My husband has a very busy job, so having a vacation to look forward to is something he loves. I can’t complain, he is a fantastic partner to travel with. 

One vacation we were down in savanna and Hilton head. While in Hilton head I found a quilt shop that had fabric specifically made for Hilton head. There was a fun quilt kit so I purchased it. 



Another vacation we were at the Oregon coast. One of my all time favorite places to visit. In fact it has a special place in my heart. It is where we got married.  At a quilt shop I found another fun kit. This time it was appliqué. On the back is specific fabric that says Cannon Beach.





The most recent purchase was a fun weekend getaway to New York City! What an absolutely fun weekend we had. I had not been to the 9/11 memorial before. It was so moving! I think we were there for over 4 hours. We also went to a show, had fabulous food, and of course I purchased some fabric from a darling quilt shop,  Gotham https://gothamquilts.com/Quilts. Memory Bear

  When my dad past away, my mother gave my ex-husband my father's bath robes. We were still married at the time. He never really like the idea of wearing them. But I was very happy. I wore my dad's bathrobes all the time, and when we divorced they came with me. They were a comfort for me through many dark days. It was like having him with me and giving me a hug.  When I married my husband now, I never really wore them. They had stayed in the back of my closet for a few years. I could never really part with them, but the need to wear them had changed. I think maybe I am just a but more centered in my life. More secure in myself. Either way I needed to do something with them.  I seen a class at my local quilt shop for memory bears. I went to sign up, but the timing didn't accommodated for  me to take the class. Let's start at the beginning

       I grew up the youngest in a very creative family. My oldest sister sewed most of my clothes through out my growing up. I also took home ec classes through school. I was comfortable with a sewing machine,  but usually relied on my sisters to do any major sewing for me.       When I married and had kids that changed. I needed to start doing for myself.  The first good sewing machine that I purchased was the Bernina activa 220.
